A Beginners Guide To Denim Menswear

After a brief period in the style wilderness, denim has made a big comeback over the past couple of years, particularly when it comes to menswear. Once fashion pariahs, pieces such as the denim jacket and denim shirt are now high street staples, whilst the popularity of jeans shows no sign of abating any time soon.

Yet given the explosion in denims popularity, there are still quite a few men out there committing massive fashion faux pas on a daily basis; think double denim, mismatched washes and poor quality items. Denim may be in fashion, but just chucking any old thing on definitely isnt. Its all about styling. Here are a few tips to help you along the way.

Consider Your Style Carefully

Denim comes in many forms and facing up to all the style possibilities can be a bit daunting for the average bloke. The best way to decide on what you want is to consider what style you want to evoke with your denim. This comes down to the cut of your denim and the colour.

The cut of your denim is massively important. For jackets, a skinny cut is associated with a punk style while a looser fit is great for teaming up with a flannel shirt to evoke grunge sensibilities. Jeans come in many styles skinny jeans are advised men going for a punk/indie vibe, but should be avoided if you have a larger frame. The best bet if youre not certain is to go for straight cut jeans a halfway house between skinny and baggy, theyre stylish and timeless.

The staple colour for denim is blue, and you cant go far wrong by sticking to it. Choose your wash carefully, however; denim jackets and shirts look suitably vintage with a light wash, whereas jeans are more stylish with a darker wash (unless youre going for a garish 80s style acid wash). Black denim isnt quite as popular but shouldnt be discounted entirely, particularly if you rock quite an edgy look.

Jacket, Jeans or Shirt?

Denim is in fashion so it makes sense that you should clad yourself head-to-toe in denim, right? Not quite. Double denim is a massive fashion faux pas and is guaranteed to gain you funny looks and sniggers in the street. Triple denim doesnt even bear thinking about!

Make your choice wisely jackets can add an informal edge to an otherwise formal outfit and look great with chinos or khakis. The same applies to denim shirts, although youll generally wear one of these in more casual scenarios. Jeans can be worn with basically anything so dont worry too much about that, just as long as you dont clash your denim!

Go For High Quality Denim

Supermarket jeans have come on leaps and bounds from the days of the 3 bright blue offering, but the best way to ensure you look good in denim is to go for high quality denim. Theres a reason why Levis and G Star clothing is so famous; its because its very well made and looks great. If you dont want to dig too deep for your denim, some high street and online retailers also do some good in-house pieces.
